Happily, Treyarch has made an Eclipse-only map playlist available in the Bonus Game lobby – though at this early stage in the DLC’s release you’ll likely end up paired with pro players who are level 300-plus and have the inhumanly fast reflexes of a 12-year-old (probably because, based on their squeaky voices, many of them are 12 years old). Perhaps I just haven’t played it in conjunction with the right mode. However, save for one match in which I just camped in hidden corners and killed everyone who ran by, I’ve yet to find a real groove on Knockout. And it has some challenging traversal in the form of massive gaps with spikes beneath that you can either double jump over or do a wall-run to avoid. It takes place in a military facility suspended above a caldron-like volcano with high-speed trains zipping along its sides. There’s a bit of opportunity for long-range shooters to perch around windows, but unless you’re playing a mode that forces you into their kill zones – like Safeguard, in which you need to protect or destroy a slowly marching robot – they’re generally easy to avoid via other paths. It’s set in a futuristic sub-orbital airport, with small plazas, tall, sloping white walls, and some well-placed congestion areas. Visually, the one that stands out most is Spire. And they’re pretty good, even if they are all more or less medium-sized maps geared mostly for mid-range play.
